A FINE PERFORMANCE. , A match between L. C. McLachlan and C. P. Morris, well-known running men, took place at Stratford on Tuesday for a purse of 120 sovs, the distance being 120 yards. The race, which was witnessed by a large gathering, was won by Morris by four inches; time, usee. At Napier the other day McLachlan covered a quarter of a mile in three-tenths of a second over the world’s best record tor over twenty years. Morris’s usee is within 2-sth sec o( H. Gent s (piofessional) record put up in England in 1887, and only i-sth sec longer than the English records of the amateur runners C. Bradley and J. W. Morton. Bradley’s record'was established in 1894, and was equalled by Morton t< u years later. Shrubb. the English athlete, is suffering from gastric influenza. He was unable to leave Melbourne for the Biuft yesterday with the other athletes, but expects to be well enough to travel in a week’s time,
