DEBATING SOCIETY V. ALL COMERS, Bv " Clean Bowled,” Yesterday afternoon, the cricket season was dpOnsd at the Schoolground Pitch, when the above teams tried conclusions. The All Comers placed some tough rags in the field, with the result that the aspirants to political honours —the Debaters—cried enough after one innings. Some of our veterans were out again in their flannels after years of absence, while the juvenile players showed some good cricket, and will certainly make players if they put more vigour into their play and practise oftener. It is to be hoped that the game will go ahead in Foxton and bring these young players out. Mr E. Spelman captained the Debating Society, and Mr G. Stiles All Comers. The latter gentleman hept the wickets for the winners, and W. Barnard acted in a like capacity for the Debating team. Messrs E. Wanklyn and J. Frew acted as umpires. The scores were;— Debating Society. C. Cummerfield, bF. Whibley o R. Spiers, bK. Farrie ... 2 L. Jenks, bF. Whibley ... o W. Barnard, bK. Furrie ... 1 E. Spelman, bK. Furrie ... 2 W. After the game, both teams were invited over to Mr Stewart’s house, where afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Stewart and Barnard. After full justice had been done to the good things provided, Mr L. E. Reade rose amid enthusiasm to thank the ladies for their kindness, and said it was pleasing to see the fair sex taking such a keen interest in the game. He hoped it would go along more smoothly than football did in the season just closed. Mr Reade then called for three cheers for the ladies, which were given with no uncertain sound. Mr E. Spelman, on behalf of the Debating Society, thanked all those who assisted to make the afternoon so enjoyable, and said he hoped for a return match. The ladies came in for more cheers at the instance of Mr Spelman, who concluded his remarks by extracting a ringing cheer from his Club mates for their opponents. Mr Stiles ended a pleasant afternoon by calling for three cheers for the Debating Society, which were heartily given.
