THE RUSSIAN ADVANCE CHECKED. A French correspondent at St. Petersburg states that General Kuropatkin telegraphed that he intends advancing slowly in order to be sure He believes General Kuroki is retreating on Liaoyang, where a battle will shortly he fought. Mr Bennett Burleigh, from Shanghai, reports that the Japanese do not expect to capture Port Arthur a month. The Russians have occupied Sahepu, midway between Yentai ‘ and Mukden. The battle was fought in a driving dust storm, which blow right into the Japanese faces. The weather being bitterly cold many were frostbitten. An officer of the general staff has informed a French correspondent that General Mishchenko’s Cossackturned General Kuroki’s army, north of Pensihu, after a long engagement, culminating in bayonet charges. The fighting to the north of Yentai on Monday and Tuesday was stubborn. The Japanese still hold Yentai station, which is damaged. The Japanese abandoned four em trenched positions.. The Russians admit losing 250 but claim to have captured several guns.
