JAPS CONFIDENT OP VICTORY. The Japanese press are undismayed at the raising of the Gripenberg's army and expresses confidence that Japan is able to place in'the field a larger and stronger army than Russia, while the arsenal at Sure is equipped to construct battleships, and big guns are being constructed at Osaka. The Daily Express’ Tokio correspondent reports that the. newspapers are impatient at the non-capture of Port Arthur. One suggests* that a sharp sword be sent to Nogi to commit “ harikari ” (suicide), and that 10,000 additional infantry and more guns be sent. BLOCKADE RUNNERS CAPTURED. PORT ARTHUR DEFENDERS , IN A BAD WAY. The Japanese captured 800 which were running the blockade Port Arthur. The newspaper Le Matin’s St. Petersburg correspondent says QenJ eral Stoessel reports that the fleet is co-operating with Admiral Nogi id raining shells into the port and town. The carnage is horrible. The fenders were fighting, hitherto, almost under cover, but now they are exposed to a plunging fire at many points. The Japanese alleged spies, recently arrested in St. Petersburg, have been released. t -
