All members of the newly-formed Awahou Club are requested to attend a meeting at the Family Hotel tonight. . Now that a Union has been formed we hope members will take a keen interest in the game and practise a little more together. The Motuiti team play Foxion their return match on the racecourse on Saturday. We hear that they intend to treat the Foxton team to a dinner in the evening. In referring to the trouble in the match Britain v. Newcastle, during the course of which Sivwright marched his men off the field, “ Offside Mac ” rises in his democratic, wrath and says :—This is the time in big football that a captain has taken his men from the field. The former occasion was in the English-Native team match in the Old Country in 1889, when Stoddart, losing his knickers, the Maoris stood ‘ around to shield him from the rude gaze of the spectators, another Englishman secured the leather and scored a try, which was allowed by Roland Hill, the referee. After protesting, “Joe” Warbrick, the Maori skipper, took his men from the field. The English press commented in unfavourable terms on Warbrick’s action, but summed up the situation by stating that nothing else could be expected from “ savages.” At the same time, New Zealand was warned'** nevah to send a team ’Ome if its members were not gentlemen ; bai jove.” And now Bedel Sivwright and his amateur team of gentlemen have followed suit to Warorick. One wonders what the English press will say now.
