A Laugh Wins a Fortune

Mr John Donahue, a well-known resident of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, has had the distinction of gaining an estate worth £200,000 through a laugh. Several years, ago, while prospecting for coal in the Cumberland Mountains of Kentucky, Mr Donahue became acquainted with a man named Bowman, who owned a large tract of land. Bowman one day had a quarrel with a notorious desperado, and the latter had drawn a revolver to shoot when Donahue, who was present, gave a loud, hearty laugh. The desperado was so astonished that he dropped his pistol, and Bowman escaped. As a reward for his laugh he gave Mr Donahue a part of his land, on which a coal vein worth £200,000 has been discovered.
