Outrage at Longburn.
. A MIDNIGHT ASSAULT. An elderly married woman living at Longburn was the victim of a brutal assault by a would-be burglar late on Wednesday night. Her husband is employed at the Freezing Works, and his work keeps him there till a late hour. On Wednesday night the woman sat up till late, waiting for her husband to return from work: As he did not arrive she retired to her bed-room, leaving the house door unlocked. Whilst undressing she heard somebody open the door and walk boldly in. Thinking it was her husband, she took no notice. A moment later the bedroom door was pushed open, and a man entered the room. Turning round to greet her husband, the poor woman was terrified to find herself face to face with a stranger. Plucking up courage, she indignantly confronted the intruder, and ordered him off the premises. Then the fellow turned on the woman, struck her savagely in the face with his fist and decamped. The woman fell heavily to the floor and the force of the fall broke her arm. Dr Stowe was called in as soon as possible. When the police were informed of the matter they took immediate steps to try and capture the assailant. Detective Benjamin and Constable Minogue set out post haste early Thursday morning. They were not long, in obtaining a clue, and the suspect was traced to the Shannon district. —M. Times. For Children’s Hacking Cough at Night, Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure. Is 6d.
