SOMEONE’S CARELESSNESS
At an inquest on Thursday at Christchurch, touching the death of Amy - arali Dewey, a single wom^ n ag*d fifty-three, evidence - >vas that she was taken Vu 0 n Saturday. Dr C layton re a er ibed for her, but after t^ K j n g medicine she became very ill, appearances being consistent with strychnine poisoning, and died on Wednesday afternoon.
Dr Clayton stated that the chemist who made up the prescription told him on Monday that he was afraid strychnine had got into the medicine. He had mixed some of the ingredients in a mottar which was not cleaned after some strychnine had been ground in it. Dr Clayton stopped the medicine,, and on Tuesday evening he and Dr Anderson decided to treat the patient for pneumonia. Dr Mickle stated that the postmortem showed ample cause of death apart from the poisoning. - The injuest was adjourned for a week for an analysis of the stomach and medicine to be made. Dr Mickle’s full evidence will then be taken.
