Manawatu County Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held on Wed* nesday. Present Ors Wilson (chairman), Clarke, Hammond, Robinson, Masters, Kendall, and Claris, CORRESPONDENCE. From F. J. Watson, drawing attention to the offensive condition of the Makowhai stream, and also suggesting the creamery drainage should be inspected. From A. Yerran, giving notice of having met with an accident at the Rongotea siding while unloading trucks.
From the Rangitikei County Council, offering to purchase the roadman’s cottage at the Bull’s bridge. From the same, forwarding correspondence from the Government relative to the proclamation as to the Bulla bridge, and stating that the council will ask that the proclamation empower the local bodies to borrow, without a po, f or renewing any portions destroyed by flood. From the Treasury, asking that £738 3a 2d, interest on loans, be paid. - Paid. From G. Hamilton, Rongotea, Offering to purchase cocksfoot on the Glen OroUa i*oad. Similar offers Were received from Jos. Gill, F. Lucinsky and J. Sanaon, for cocksfoot in different parts of the district. From the Foxton Borough Council, forwarding statement of cost of maintenance and repairs to the Whirokino bridge. The total amount is £359 0a 7d, and the Council’s share is £ll9 18s 6d.
From Stevens, Austin and Easton, asking the Council to take over a road and offering tn return to take over another road.
From Inspector Perry, reporting he had attended fire cases of infectious illness in the district, and had also Jiimigated the Sandon school. Notices had been served on a number of Eongotea residents with reference to cleaning lip premises. Several premises will be inspected at Sandon at an early date. Prom F. H. Vile, offering to supply dog for the ensuing season, at Same price as previously. From J. Bleakley, complaining of the way Eongotea goods have been indiscriminately “ dumped ” in the railway trucks at Foxton, and suggesting representation being made to the authorities on the matter.
From G. Gray, Bulls, complaining of “ broaching ” of cases of whisky sent him.
From the Foxton Borough Council, asking Council to repair culvert on No. 6 Line, Moutoa, and that the sand drift and holes in the same road be also attended to. From the Valuation Department, stating cost of revising valuation roll for the past year, £2l 5s sd. From L. H. Greenaway, asking for improvements to McLennan’s Line. Subsidy to be allowed on work done by Mr Greenaway. From several ratepayers, Sandon, asking that the roads be thrown open to stock. No action taken. REPORTS. The secretary reported the various balances as follows; General account, dr. £3070 2s 2d, loan account, cr. £2365 2s Bd, net debit balance, £704 19s 6d, Riding accounts, Sandon riding, dr. £lls 10s 4d, Mt Stewart, cr. £69 Os 2d., Waitohi, cr, £29 5s Bd, Eongotea, cr, £238 9s 2d, Carnarvon, cr, £l2 Os 7d, KawaKawa, dr, £26 la 4d, Awahou, cr, £179 16s lid.
Reporting on the tramway for November'and December, the manager said it showed poorly financially, on account of the cost of renewing the route of the tramway and haulage of metal for the same. The debit balance for November was £46 17s 3d and for December, £lB 19a lOd, The financial results for the next three months should be decidedly better. The opinion was expressed that to successfully compete with metal contract requirements, more trucks would be required for the tram, there being with contracts let, and to be let, 11,550 yards of metal required in addition to the ordinary traffic. Specials had been run in connection with the pig traffic, and were worked with little inconvenience. The manager also reported on complaints received as to broaching whisky and careless loading of goods, adding that steps had been taken in each matter. Necessary repairs to one of the engines was estimated to cost £SO, and three weeks would be necessary to carry out the work. The haulage for November included : —Grain 30 tons, merchandise 64£ tons, minerals tons, hemp 27f tons, pigs 4 trucks, wool 211 bales, manures 68 tons, fares £l3 7s lOd. Figures were practically the same in December, but fares only totalled £9 12s 4d. MISCELLANEOUS. The chairman was appointed to represent the Council at the election of a representative on the Wellington Harbour Board. Tenders for the dog tax will be called for next meeting. Sheep, cattle and rabbit dogs will be charged 2-i 6d ; all other dogs 5s each. Tenders will be also called for next meeting for metalling Taikorea road,
I After luncheon, Mr Richmond presented a petition on behalf of residents of the Taikorea road, asking that as much of the road as possible be metalled this summer. The chairman informed Mr Richmond that tenders for metalling the road would be invited for next meeting. The following tenders were accepted :—Contract 168, Stuart and Sons 2s 4d per yard; contract 164, Stuart and Sons 2s 6d per yard ; contract 165, Davis and Lumsden 4s per yard, conditionally upon the tramway being able to supply the 800 yards of metal required. Failing this supply 200 yards to be delivered on the east side of road at 5s 6d per yard; contract 167, Davis and Lums* den 8s 8d per yard! contract 170, W. R. Anderson 3s lOd per yard, conditionally upon the metal hemp supplied as specified ; contract 171, Davis and Lumsden, 4s 2d per yard; contract 172, W, R. Anderson 8s lid per yard. Fresh tenders ivill be invited for cfinttMla not accepted, ttafilely, 166,168, and 169. Tenders to be in by 27th inst., and to be opened by a committee of the Council, consisting of the chairman and Cra Hammond and Masters. The Council then adjourned.
