Only a Hoax.
The following note, which was in a bottle, was picked up at the Gorge ferry by the ferryman a few days ago, says the Standard :—The Gorge, Deo. 9th, 1903. Dear friends and enemies. If you happen to find this note you will know that I have gone to “ Davy Jones’ Locker ” the deep blue sea All I ask is that the finder of this note will please present it at the “ Standard ” office in Palmerston, and they will receive £5 reward for same. Please obey a dying man’s request. —W. H. H. Neill.-The foregoing is apparently a hoax, but if it is genuine we are not taking any in the matter of paying £5 to the finder of the note as suggested by Neill. However, in fairness to the finder, we should state that modesty prevented him from claiming the £5. The police were not quite so backward, and we felt sorry to have to refuse a demand for the money by Constable Hattie.
