The Late Sir Hector Macdonald.

On Thursday afternoon'Sir Hector Macdonald was found lying on the floor, with his head resting against the dressing-table, with a bullet in his temple, in the Hotel Regina, Paris.

Sir J. W- Ridgeway, speaking in the .Legislative Council in Ceylon, referred to tho very grave charges preferred against the officer, and said that he hoped a searching courtmartial would secure a complete and honourable acquittal. With the Governor’s concurrence, Sir Hector Macdonald went to England by the Ophir to consult his friends and superior officers. , The “ Calcutta Englishman ” of February 21st;, publishes the following from Ceylon : “ Local curiosity is strong regarding Sir Hector Macdonald’s abrupt departure, heightened by the fact that he left without a guard of honour or any manifestation from officials or the public.” It was after his visit to England, Sir Hector Macdonald alighted on his return journey at Paris at the •20th, and put up at the Hotel Regina. His friends anticipated his acquittal by the courtraartial, and the news of his suicide has been received with universal sorrow in the clubs and in military circles.
