Bishop of Auckland.
After sitting for several hours ill camera the Auckland Synod unanimously decided to nominate the Rev, M. R. Neligau to be Bishop of Auckland in succession to the late Bishop Cowie. Mr Neligan has been strongly recommended by Ihe Bishops of London and Manchester, and also consulted, before permitting himself to be nominated, the Bishops of Winchester, Bath and Wells (formerly of Adelaide), and Bishop Montgomery (formerly of Tasmania). Mr Neligan is in the prime of life, being a little over forty years of age. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated B.A. in 1884 and M.A. in 1887. He was ordained deacon in 1886 and priest in 1887 (in the Diocese of York)- He was curate of St. Panl’s, Sculcoates (York), from 1886 to 1887; Derehan, 1889-90; Christchurch, Paddington (London), 1890-94, and vicar of St. Stephen’s Paddington, since 1894. Since he has been in charge of the parish St. Stephen’s has progressed most remarkably. He has the reputation of being a brilliant preacher and a most vigorous and successul organiser, and has at present three curates under him.
The general opinion is that the new Bishop will take a very bight position in the Church of the Province of New Zealand. Ail the speakers at the Synod expressed great satisfaction at the choice made.
