Funeral of the Late A. C. Baker.
On Thursday the body of the late Mr Arthur C. Baker was laid to rest in the cemetery, the Rev. H. Wilson reading the Church of England service and Mr. T. Westwood, chaplin, the service of the Foresters. A military funeral, was accorded the deceased, tho School Cadets forming the advance guard, followed by the Foxton Rifle Volunteers, under Captain Walsh. The coffin was laid upon an -open carriage* with the ensign and tho late officer's hat and amis Upon it; Tho carriage was covered with tfrgfttlis from public bodies and friends, When the service was concluded at the grave’s side the firing party of Volunteers fired the customary three vollies, and the bugler blew the Last Post.
The funeral cortege was the largest we liaVo sSenj ris when the Cadets, leading, reached the Bank of New Zealand the last horsemen had just turned the corner by Union Street. Sergeants of the Volunteers carried the coffin from the house as well as from the carriage at the cemetery to the side of the graVe. Friends were present from all parts, from Wanganui, Palmerston and elsewhere. Captain Jack, of the Palmerston Cadets, and Lieut. Morgan, of the Palmerston Guards, attended. The Mayor and Borough Councillors followed the body, as well as the members of the Court Pride body of Foresters. All places of business were closed from 1 45 to 4 o’clock, and all flags were flown half-mast high. Whatever could be done to testify to the esteem the deceased Was held in was done, and all that could in anyway mitigate the blow to the widow and family of the deceased was carried out.
