The Volcanic Eruptions.
Fifty thousand persons are homeless in St. Vincent. The Lord Mayor’s fund amounts to £22,000, including donations of £IOOO from Mr Carnegie and £250 from the Prince and Princess of Wales.
The injured at Si Vincent number three thousand. The destitution is appalling. There were fifteen violent detonations, with vivid lightning, at Martinique early on Saturday, the eruptions becoming worse. New craters have appeared in the neighbourhood of Le Precheur. The Mayor of Trinite declares that the wall of flame during the great outburst on the Bth insi was so sharply defined that a bull grazing on the edge of its track was roasted on one side, and bad not a hair singed on the other. The northern residents of the island, who took refuge on the southern part, are returning to their homes, notwithstanding the danger. Internal rumblings were heard at Forfe-de France on Saturday. Only the tops of trees are visible in the Qaribs’ country in St. Vincent, the rest is buried in dust. The captain of the steamer Boddam has died from injuries he received at the eruption at St. Pierre. The upper north-westerly currents of hot air meeting the south-westerly trade winds caused showers of white ashes to fall in Le Garbet, and the inhabitants are fleeing from the town. The Royal Society is sending a Commission to investigate the disturbances in Martinique and St. Vincent.
