Judge and Juries.
At the conclusion of a case, at the Auckland Supreme Court Mr Justice Connolly made some very pointed remarks about the jury. The case was one in which a man was charged with stealing £5 from a fellow lodger.. The jury, after about an hours’ retirement returned to Court with a verdict of not guilty. “ I had occasion, daring my summing up,” remarked his Honor,, “to observe that trial by jury was becoming a farce. I think this jury has proved my words. A clearer case was never tried. It is really becoming ridiculous to try prisoners at all.” His Honor then discharged the prisoner, and turning to the tow of jurymen, remarked, “and I wish I poald discharge you also.” .
