The Opium Habit.

Our Chinese friends are fond of smoking opium, and experts state that in some parts of China it is wholesome and necessary to those who spend their life on the water. There is nothing to form such an excuse in this colony, and last session “ The Opium Prohibition Act ’’ was passed, which provides “ that any person found smoking opium or permitting or abetting the smoking of opium shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding ten pdunds.” Last night Constable Forster, accompanied by Constable Kidd, went up the river bank to the wbares occupied by Jim Wong Lee and Chew Hee, and found them both smoking opium. The paraphernalia was seized, which consisted of pipes, opium and lamps for keeping the opium melted, and many other curiosities.

The cases will be heard on the 20th February next.
