The Transvaal.
THE TRANSVAAL ARCHIVES. It is stated by the "Daily Mail" that in response to Great Britain's request, the commander of the Netherlands warship upon which Mr Kruger proposes to journey to Europe, has been instructed to obtain the ex Presidents guarantee that his baggage contains no archives or other State property. The officers have been instructed to exclude such documents from the baggage of Mr Kruger's entourage. UNPAID MERCENARIES. The Irish Brigade, which fought with the Boer army, has been transferred to a Portuguese ironclad at Delagoa Bay, to prevent them attacking the Transvaal officials at Lorenzo Marques, for arrears of pay. PEACE NOT TO BE DECLARED. The Hon. J. Chamberlain states in a letter that as the Boer Republics have been annexed by Great Britain, he does not anticipate that any formal declaration of peace will be made. PAYMENTS TO WOUNDED. Lord Lansdowne. Secretary of State for War, announces that permanently disabled soldiers will receive life pensions from one and sixpence per day upwards. THE TREASON BILL. The Treason Bill has been read a third time in the Cape Legislative Council. RELIEF OF A GARRISON. Brigadier-General Settle, with 7000 (?7oo) men has relieved the British garrison at Schweitzer Reineke, which
had been surrounded by a Boer force for three weeks. The Boers suffered heavily in the engagement, and the commandant was captured. NATIVES ARMING. The natives of the Zoutpansberg district, in the north-east of the Transvaal are preparing to resist an incur* sion of the Boers. ANOTHER GREAT TREK. German shipping firms have arranged for 3500 Boers to trek toi German West Africa. ~. LEE-METFORD v. MAUSER. Lord Roberts declares that the soldiers are quite satisfied with the Lee-Metford rifle, and says that the Boers use it instead of the Mauser whenever they have a chance. MISCELLANEOUS. Hellbron, Reitz and Lindley, in the north-east of Orange -River Colony, have been re-occupied. "V
