Burial of King Humbert.
King Humbert's funeral was a wonderfully impressive demonstration of national sorrow. Hundreds of thousands of bareheaded mourners watched the procession in absolute silence. There were
50,000 foreigners and 200 clergy present. The young King, the Dukes of Aosta, Genoa, Oporto, Sparta and Argyll, the Princes of Nekina and Danilo, Prince Henry of Russia, Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria and the Count of Turin followed the cortege. At one point the procession was brought to a sudden stop through a panic. Somebody in the crowd cried, " A bomb — they have killed the King." The Princes drew their swords and rallied round the King, and the panic soon subsided. The Archbishop of Genoa celebrated a majestic Mass in the Pantheon. Queen Margherita and Princess Helei of Savoy were present.
