Serious Charges against Bank Officials.

On Friday morning Alexander Y. Hay and William Allan, manager and teller, respectively of the Bank of New Zealand, Rangiora, were arrested on a charge of having stolen from the Bank various sums amounting to £4782 18s Bd. The accused, who had been suspended for a fortnight, and were prepared for the charges, were brought immediately before the Justices of the Peace. Alexander Young Hay was charged that he did on January 29th, 1894, at Rangiora, steal the sum of £80 5s 2d, and on February 26th, 1900, the sum of £68 15s. He was also jointly charged with Allan, the teller, with having on divers dates between January Ist, 1894, and July 10th, 1900, stolen various sums amounting in the whole to £4688 .188 6d. Mr Fisher, who appeared for the prosecuting Bank, applied for a remand until 9 a.m. on Tuesday next. Mr Helnore, who appeared for W. Allan, and represented Mr Harper, counsel for Mr A. Y. Hay, had no objection to offer, and asked for bail, which was fixed on the first two charges on accused's own recognisance of £150 and two sureties of £100 each, and on the main charges on the two accused recognisances of £1000 each, aud two sureties of £500 each. The total amount of bail was £4850. The sureties were immediately forthcoming.
