The Governor of Shantung, on the 15th telegraphed that soldiers and " Boxers," with heavy cannon, made an inroad into the Legations. After a gallant defence the ammunition was exhausted, and an the foreigners were killed. The Allies landed a force, and assisted by Maxims, soon secured the Taku forte, though the Chinese offered a desperate resistance. One shot exploded the powder magazine, the debris burying a large number of Chinese. The English and Japanese flags were hoisted on the first fort, the Russian on the second, and the German and Austrian on the third. The forts, which had been considered by the Chinese to be impregnable, were reduced by five little, gunboats in seven hours. Inside the forts presented a gruesome sight of headless and limbless bodies lying in all directions, while the river in the vicinity was stained with blood. A large quantity of stores and ammunition are still irr the fort.
