Fighting in the Soudan.
» An engagement has taken place in j the Soudan, between a force of 2500 Dervishers, headed by Ahmed Fedil, one of the Khalifa's chief supporters, and the Egyptian troops. The enemy showed great gallantry, and came within eighty yards of the Egyptian artillery and Maxim guns before their charge was finally checked. Their defeat was complete, four hundred Dervishers being left dead on the field. The official report of the engagement received by the War Office stales that I the Dervishes were engaged by BrevetColonel Sir F. R. Wingate, Director of the Military Intelligence Department of the Egyptian Army, at Gedid on the Blue Nile, about ten miles south of Khartoum. The result was complete victory after a sharp fight. During the engagement the Khalifa was killed, together with his bodyguard. Many of his principal Emirs > were either killed or captured' Osman Digna, however, escaped. Thousands of the enemy surrendered and their camp was taken. Three Egyptian soldiers were killed and twelve wounded. The Soudan has now been declared open to trade.
