America Cup.
FIRST COMPLETE RACE. The first of the races for the America Cup was completed on Monday and resulted as follows : — Messrs Pierpoint Morgan and Iselin's Columbia (defender) 1 Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock (challenger) 2 The course was a straight one of fifteen miles from the Sandy Hook Lightship, returning the same way. There was a seven-knot breeze at the start, and Columbia, the American yacht, had the windward position. The weather was foggy, and the water smooth. Columbia led by a quarter of a mile after an hour had gone, and rounded the mark boat a mile ahead. The wind stiffened on the return. Superbly handled, Columbia won by half a mile. SECOND RACE. In the second race of the present series of races for the America Cup, the British yacht Shramrock was disabled, and retired half an hour after the start. Details of the mishap to Shamrock, go to show that the challenger, which had established a slight lead, was jumping in a heavy sea when her backtsay broke, and the topmast snapped. Columbia finished the course alone.
