Road Works and Elections.
♦ : During the debate -on the Financial Statement Mr Lang read the fo lowing paragraph from a Waikato paper. The paragraph is as follows : — •' When the Colonel Commanding *he Di.-triot was here the other day 4o inspect our Volunteer Mounted Rifle*?, there was but a small muster *oq parade, only some fifteen of the tanks. The Colonel inquired as to reason of so small an attendance, but received no satisfactory explanation. At last, addressing the men, he asked them to . account for the absence of so many of their comrades. For some time there was a silence. At lass one took upon himself to reply • that they were absent on ac count of being at work on the Government road.' 'And When,' inquired the Cjlonel. ' do you think they will have completed their Government work ? ' Another long pause ; then replied the same innocent young trooper, ' When the elections are over, I suppose. Sir.' ' Then a smile passed over the troop, a smile tbat could be heard, and the Colonel sought no more enlightenmeat as to the absent ones "
