♦ . TERRIFIC STORMS IN THE UNITED STATES. A. terrible storm has swept the Atlantic coast, extending far inland. All the Atlantic steamers were days overdue, and the gravest anxiety wa9 fr>lt as to them The storm began with a blizzird, and continued two weeks before their was a decided rise in the temperature. In B sr.on, on February 18, snow was drifted to second storey windows. Snow fell a* far south as New Orleans, Washington, and Philadel ohia, an 1 scores of cities north and -■ouch experienced degrees of old oever before known. At Wa?hineton the wpatbpr bureau reported 17 degrees below zero. There was terrible suffering every where, and not a f j w people were frnz >n to death in New York and Washington. The leading new • papers opened subscription lists for the poor, and many thousand dollars came qiickly in response to dreadful need. In New York, Governor Rooseveldfc, late rough rider, ordered the armouries of the Otiy to open to keep the poor warm and comfortable and tried to supply blankets and all necessaries, including food. The railroads were tied up for days, and business and social functions were practically suspended. X)n February 15 the oitiea were buried under the weight of snow, unlike anything ever experienced before, and the digging out process was slow, even with thousands of men and teams endeavouring to clear away or beat down the drifts which were praotically barricades. The whole of tbe United States, with the exception of tbe Pacific States, suffered terribly from | tbe storm. In California sunshine and delight* fully warm weather have prevailed all through the winter.
