ARREST OF A SUSPECT.
CAPTURED AFTER A DESPERATE RESISTANCE.
News has been received in the city that the police at Dalby (a small township about 140 miles away) have arrested a man named Burgess, aged 60 years, on a charge of complicity in the death of the Murphys. He was brought before the Court and remanded for eight days. It transpired that he was encountered making his way across country, and when questioned by the troopers refused to give any account of his whereabouts during the Christmas holidays. The man was accordingly arrested, but offered a desperate resistance, and it required all the efforts of four policemen to secure him. A satisfactory explanation has been given of certain fragments of a letter signed " Howard," which were found near Gatton by McNeill, a brother-in-law of the deceased. The document was at first, owing to the nature of its contents, looked upon as a likely clue to a solution of the mystery. Several pieces of dress material bearing bloody finger marks have been found hidden in some bushes four miles north of the scene of the tragedyThe police have been further strengthened, and contingents told off to thoroughly search the different sections of the district. It appears that the man Burgess was only recently discharged from gaol, serving a sentence for attempted criminal assault.
