The Pope has directed Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore and head of the Roman Catholic Church in America, not to overstep the limits of the Catholic dogma and discipline. A deputation representing " 146 denominational churohes and 8,000,---000 Christians " petitioned President McKinley to support some form of international arbitration as a substitute for war. The President, who received the proposal cordially, said that, while supporting the Czar's scheme for bringing about international disarmament, he regretted that Amerioa was unable to see her way to reduce the existing armament. The Court of Cassation has examined ex-Major Esterhazy's mis* tress. She has confessed to sending the " Blanohe Speranza telegrams " which played such a prominent part in the Dreyfus case, the alleged author being a mysteriously veiled lady. The anti-Imperialist League formed in America to combat with tbe Jingo section and those advocating territorial expansion abroad, has now branches in 30 " States. Grover Cleveland, John Sherman, Bishop Potter, Oart Schurz and many other parsons of eminence have joined.
