The Police Force
QUALIFICATIONS FOR RECRUITS. New regulations respecting the police force are published in this week's t! Gazette." The police force will be divided into the fol lowing grades : — Commissioner, inBpectorp, sub-'n^peetors, sergeants* major, sergeants aud constables. Vacancies in tho force will be filled from candidates selected by the Commissioner of Police, subject to the approval of the Minister having the control of the department for the time being. The candidates selected mu4 be able to read, write and spell, and to work sums in simple addition and subtraction They must ba of unexceptionable moral character, of which satisfactory testimonials will be rpqumd. They mast possess activity ; intelligence and good temper. They muet not be le3s th«n 21 and not more than 80 years of age, but this age-limit is not to apply to membarH of the Permanent Militia who joined that force before the date of these regulations on the understanding that if found suitable they would be eligible for enrolment in the police force up to 40 years of ago. They must not be under sft 9in in height of good physique, and of a normal chest measurement of not less than 98in ; of good health, free from bodily complaint, of pound constitution and successfully vaccinated. Candidates, before appointment to the probationary olass, will have to undergo a medical examination. If selected they will be drafted to a depot in Wellington as probationer? and before being appointed police conrtab'e* will have to undergo a further departmental examination. Should it be found that thpy lack the noceepary qualifications they will be discharged from the dopot without b^ing appointed. "M»n who have previously servpd in the N.w Zealand or any oth?r police force may, at the discretion of the Commissioner, be exempted from the depot training. Sersrpan f a and constables will bp allowed twelve days' leave of absence annually on full pay, and above that time no pay will be given. This lp*ve will bo al'owed to accumulate up to 86 # daya, but it must not exceed that period except, under special circumstances, to be dtoided by the Commissioner.
