Great Earthquake at Gisborne.

♦ The heaviest earthquake experienced in Gisborne for years occurred at six on Sunday evening being one of a series of eight, which occurred between 4 p.m. and 2 a.m. The ground rose everywhere in confused masses causing houses to creak and rock violently, trees to roll about like ships at sea, tanks to splash out their contents, and several chimneys to fall, and generally doing a good deal of damage. The heaviest sufferer was Whinray, furniture dealer, the parapet of whose two storey building fell, crashing through the roof of his fancy arcade destroying a quantity of crockery and fancy goods. Whinray estimates the damages at £200. Ford, draper, estimates the damage done to his stock at £100 by water being splashed out of the tank in the roof of the building. Minor losses are reported at several other business places. A series of violent earthquakes occured also at Napier, one of them being the most severe felt for many years.
