New Zealand Hemp.
Messrs Bastone and Finninger under date London, 21st October, 1898, report as follows :—As usual the market in this article has been influenced by the course of the leading rope-making fibre, Manilla hemp (which for the present appears to have settled down at about £30 for, fair current quality.) There has been a considerable amount of business done in NevrZealand both on spot and for arrival. Prices have to some extent given away and trans* actions during last few days have been (for arrival November December shipment) at £21 iosperton to £22, cost freight and insurance London, whilst on spot London sales have been effected at £23 to £24 per. ton. Usual landed London terms quality good fair Wellington. (Careful attention of . shippers should be given that quality is fully up to this standard.) Stock moderate, and immediate prospects regarded as fair, but of course subject to the lead of Manilla hemp, whiok article is statistically in a position of some strength, but the future value of which will have to be determined by events mainly in the Phillipines.
