Manawatu County Council.
The Annual General Meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held in the County offices, Sanson, on Wednesday the 23rd inst. at noon. Present — Crs J. G. Wilson, T. Masters, H. Hammond, T. Clark, F. Robinson and A. Strang. The Clerk presided and called for nominations for the position of Chairman. Proposed by Cr Hammond, seconded by Cr Clark, That Cr J. G. Wilson be elected Chairman of the Manawatu County Council. — Carried unanimously. The Chairman and Cr Hammond were appointed to represent the Council on the District of Palmerston North Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the correspondence was dealt with. From District of Palmerston North Hospital and Charitable Aid Board,
advising that the Council were allowed to nominate two representatives to the Board. — The Chairman and Cr Hani' mond were appointed. From T. Bowe, Moutoa, complaining of the condition of the road leading to his property. Left in the hands of Cr Strang. From the Chief Surveyor stating that the plans for the new Beach Road, Foxton. had been approved and.£m^ warded on for the purpose of gazettf^R. and registration. From New" Zealand Cyclist's Tourist Club, saying that they would be prepared to erect danger posts if required in the county. From E. Pigott, requesting to be authorised to obtain some new gear, found necessary for working Shannon Ferry punt. Mr Pigott also requested that his deposit of £10 on former agreement be returned, the lease haveing expired. The matter of gear was left in the hands of Councillor Strang, and the matter of the deposit was left over until next meeting. From the Assets Realisation Board claiming the sum of £6 ios as a compensation for the loss of a bullock at Shannon Ferry on the 29th July. The loss was said to have been caused by the inadequate accomodation provi^fci for crossing stock. It was dectaeS not to recognise any responsibility. The Chairman reported what had been done at the Conference held at Bulls the previous day re bridge construction and sites. The Councillors expressed their entire approval of the action taken at the meeting by their representatives. The Clerk reported that acting on instructions received from the Chairman and the Committee appointed to consider the question of shelter sheds at Rosina and Whale Line Sidings he had ordered material and had let a contract for the construction of two sheds 20ft x 12ft and sft platform to cost under £ 20. The sheds would probably be completed by the first week in December. The tramway manager presented a report of the working of the tramway for the three years ended October 1898. The report showed that the traffic has considerably increased, especially in the wool and grain items while the line was in a far better condition, a fact acknowledged by the report of the Inspector of Government Railways. The Overseer reported that the recent heavy rains had washed the metal off the roads at various points, and that a certain amouut of damage had been done by the flood at the embankment at Scott's Ferry and also on the River Bank Line. It was anticipated, how* ever, that the repairs would not cost a large sum. It was resolved that the County Office be closed from the 24th December, 1898, to the fourth January, 1899, inclusive for the Christmas and New Year holidays. That a Committee consisting of the Chairman, Crs Clark, McLennan and Masters be appointed to deal with the accounts in December, pbwer being given to them- to pass them for payment, and to deal with tenders. The meeting to be held on 14th December. That fresh tenders be called for metalling Sanson's Line. That the sum of £10 ios be paid to^^ Mr W. Alzdori for surveying andmak-^ ing plans for the new Beach Road through Messrs Robinson's property, the plans having been approved by the Chief Surveyor. That the action of the Chairman and Councillor Hammond in signing the agreement between the Council and E. Piggot for the right of collecting tolls at Shannon Ferry for twelve months from 15t.11 October, 1890, be confirmed. The Council then adjourned. — Advocate.
