The Wirokino Bridge.

•* It was fondly thought that as the sum of £1000 was placed on the estimates for the Wirokino bridge, as part of subsidy of pound for pound, and as the estimates are passed, the negotiations might be concluded as most satisfactorily settled. . It does not appear to be the case, however, as the Mayor is finding out. Sometime ago the Minister for Lands excused his not finding the amount necessary for this bridge on the plea that the local body had not complied with certain necessary conditions. The Mayor took steps to have these duly complied with, the plans were prepared and lodged and approved of, and other details attended to, and nothing was heard of anything not being up to the requirements until the other day when the Minister was asked to the authority to erect this bridge. Now the Mayor is again informed that when the necessary preliminaries have been complied with the Minister will duly consider the application . Our member has been always consulted by the Mayor and it is astonishing how very wearisome a government department can make the the job of extracting money from them when they wish to retain it. Mr Stevens should for his own sake see that this farce is played out to our satisfaction this time, and we are convinced that if he leaves Wellington without everything in connection with this bridge being p*ut in a decided and satisfactory footing, the support that he has hitherto received .in this this district will be gone, as the electors feel they are being fooled for personal purposes of the government. We regret to have to put the matter in this light, as we have always expressed our firm belief in the honesty of Mr Steven's efforts in this work and we hold that opinion still, and we also held with him that as the Minister for Lands had promised the subsidy, we should get it but we are forced to doubt this now. We may get it, but it

was understood that it would be at \ once, nnd now the Minister appears « desirous of delaying matters till it gets ] nearer polling-day. ______-_-_-—____-_—_>
