NAVAL ENGAGEMENT.
The Spanish and American fleets in Eastern waters have met off the coast of the Philippine Islands, and fought a determined battlo.
The Spaniards claim to hava won the victory, but admit that they have suffered heavy losses.
The vessel comprising the Ameri^ can squadron were the cruisers Olympia (5500 tons), Baltimore (4600), Boston (3189), Raleigh (4040) and the gunboats Petrel (800) and Concord (1700).
The Spanish fleet at Manila consisted of the cruisers Castillo, Don Juan de Austria (1152 tons), Don Antonio de Ulloa (1152 tons), Isla de Luzon (1040 tons), I3la de Cuba (1040 tons), Reina Ctistina (3090), ann Velasco (1152 tons) ; gunboats Argo, Blanco, General Lezo (624 ton?), Marquis dal Daero (500 toni, despatch vessel), and the troopships Cebu, General Alava and Manila, also 24 small river gunboats. The result of the engagement is claimed as a victory by both sides.
