Fearful Explosion on an American Warship.
GREAT LOSS OF LIFE.
! A terrific explosion occurred on the American armoured cruiser | Maine, a vessel of 6684 tons, which cost £517,000, as she lay in the harbour of Havannah, the capital of Cuba. Many of those on board are known to have been killed and injured, and 200 are missing. The explosion caused much damage throughout the city. The explosion occurred in the bow of the vessel under the men's quarter?. Many of the crew were blown to sea in their night clothes, and .were rescued by Spanish warships. All the officers escaped except two. After the explosion the Maine drifted upon a bank enveloped in flames.
The captain of the Maine ha 9 cabled to the United States Government that public opinion, in judg ing as to the cause of the explosion, had better be suspended. Spain has expressed great regret at the disaster.
