The British Brigade in the Soudan.

Notwithstanding that Sir Herbert Kitchener and his staff were at Wada Hflfa, General Gafcaore received instructions to leave England, on January 6, for Egypt, to take command of the British Brigade in

the Soudan. His Brigade-Major, Sir Henry Bawlinson, was to accompany him. General Gatacre joined the 77th Foot in 1862, and passed the Staff College in 1874. He took part in the Hazara Expedition ta^t 1888, and was in Burmah in tnmF following year. But it was in the Ghitral campaign of 1895 that he. specially distinguished himself. He led the action at Mamugai, and also conduoted the passage of the Janbatai and Lowerai Passes. He re" ceived his 0.8. in recognition of these services.
