Manawatu County Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council, was held on Wednesday last at Sanson. Present— Crs Taylor (chairman), J£R. McLennan, T. Masters, J. $. Wilson, Strang, H. Hammond, and T. P. Clark. •*• Tho inward correspondence was dsalt with as follows : — From a number of residents of Rongotea, requesting the Council to re-metal a portion of the Rongotea>> Longburn road. — Tenders to be invited for metalling a portion of the road. | From the Sluggish Drainage Board, re lowering a drain to the Taikorea road. It was resolved, That the culvert in front of Mr Gray's property, referred to in the Sluggish River Drainage Board's letter of the 3rd, be lowered to the new drain level, on condition that Mr Gray finds half the cost, subject to the approval of the County Overseer. From the North Wairarapa County Council, : stating that the interest on a loan raised locally, under the Counties Act, 1876, in the Wairarapa County was charged to the separate rate account of the various ridings interested. No exception had been taken to this course by the Audit Department. The interest on all loans raised by the Council under the Roads and Bridges Act, 1882, or the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886, 4s paid out of special rates whether the special areas are coterminious with riding boundaries or otherwise. From the Waipawa County Council, stating that special rates in their county were collected to pay interest on loans raised over special rating districts. Should these not be sufficient., rates collected at the time interest became due were transferred from the general fund for the time being. — Consideration deferred until replies were received from other local bodies communicated with. FroartheSluggish Drainage Board, offering to pay half the cost of erecting a stop bank to the Oroua river opposite sections 70 and 71, on the Main Drain road if the Council con* sidered the estimate given by the Board of the cost of the work excessive. It was resolved that tha Council pay half the cost up to £20. From the Dspartment of Lands and Survey, asking whether the bush fires had destroyed or damaged any bridges or culverts in tha county. — No damage of the kind done. From the Manchester Road Board, slating that the charge to each local body in respect to the preparation oi bye- laws was £4 17s. From Thomas Young, a3king for a refund of £2 18j, and stating that he was not the cauge of the trucks being delayed. — R-fund refused. From the Rongotea Co operative Dairy Company, requesting that the road lending to the new creamery b> metalled. — Consideration defarred. From the Foxton Borough Council ivqnesticg that the Beach road bfl made during the dry weather. — Plans forwarded to the SurvoyorGeneral for approval. From the Rangitikei County Council, enclosing copy of resolution passed in respect to the re-erection of tho Rangitikei bridge. Mr D. McKenzie waited on tha Council to draw attention to (he dangerous condition of a portion of Wilson's line. He said his trap had once been overturned at the place he referred .to.- Crs Maaterg, Wilson, and the Overseer to visit the road and report. From the Manawatu Railway Company refusing to sell a locomotive under £300. The Chairman explained that he had had the locomotive exaniined. He stated that it would cost £60 to put the locomotive in good repair, and it would be necessary to put new wheels on the Wallaby. It w&3 resolved— That the name of John Goodwin be substituted for that of Robert Barkerj in tha rate roll as owner of section 88, Sapdon Block. That A. jKqbarstein be granted a renewal of slaughtering license for premises situated on section 19, near Rongotea. That Crs McLennan and Clark, with the Engineer arrange for the spending of the remainder of the loan of £60 on Sandon Lfue, and invite tenders for the work neoessary. TENDERS. The tendev of W. J. Neill for the supply of dog collars at 6d eaoh complete was aocepied It was resolved that John Gaorge Harris bs appointed registrar of <3ogs for the County of Manawatu ; that the fee of 23 63 for sheep, cattle, and rabbit dogs and 5s for all other dogs be the sum payable lor year 1898, and that the registrar's office be the County Office, Sandon. The tenders for metalling Elkine road were left with Cr Strang and the Overseer to deal with. For sanding tfie Moutoa road— T. Young tendered Is 6d a chain ; Anderson and Reed, Is 8d ; E. A. Howe, la 8i ; J. Stewart, Is lid ; I and Martin Boyle, Is 2£d. Martin Boyle's tender was ac cepted. The tender of J. G. Harris for the collection of the dog tax for £49 Is 6d was accepted. That the tenders be called for
raising and forming Main Drain road, tenders to be opened and considered by a committee, consisting of the Chairman, Cra Clark, Hammond, and McLennan, to meet on 22nd at 2 o'clock. That tenders be called for constructing the Beale road, Awahou riding, Fo. 18, a3 scheduled under the special loan. That tenders be called for the metal required on the County and district road 3 as embodied in the Overseer's report. These works were 650 yards metal on Rongotea-Long-burn road ; Feilding road, 150 yards ; Sandon-Awahuri road, 200 yards; Sanson»Bulls and Sanson-Foxton, 100 yards; Foxton-Shannon road, 150 yard? ; Roaina line, 60 yards ; Banks line, 125 yards; Tipo-Awa-huri road, 100 yards ; Penny's line, 80 yards. It was resolved, That Mr Hunter's offer for gravel on the Feilding* Awahuri road be accepted, and an agreement entered into with him for 5 yciws.—Advocate.
