" All's Well That Ends Well."
Iq th 9 Supreme Court thia week Counsel for an accused asked a witness his opinion of the character of the accused, and asked him haw long hs had known him. From something that had previously occurred and owing also to the difficulty of hearing any one distinctly in. the Court, the witness who was friendly to the accused, thought tho question referred to some one else and thus replied " I have known him for 27 years and always knew him to be of a cunning and a shady character and wag looked upon as being shifty and tricky by the natives !' " Who are you speaking of" shouted the Counsel of the accused, " of so and so, referring by name to the owner of the character, " Oh, I asked you about the accused." This altered matters considerably, and the accused got a much better character than it bad appeared he wao going to get. All'i well that ends well, but during the short period of suspense very much astonishment was shown. j ' ' j '
