Egypt.
m Mr Cavendish, the English explorer, who last year carried out an adventurous caravan expedition in Central Eastern Africa, has been chosen leader of an expedition, comprising ten Europeans with an escort of 400 armed marines, to the Upper Nile regions. The object of the expedition is to reach the junction of the Sobat river, draining Eastern Soudan aud the White Nile. It is their intention, it is believed, to forestall the French expedition under Captain Marcband. One of the gunboats operating in conjunction with the Anglo-Egyptian campaign in the Soudan reached the Sixth Cataract on the Nile, which is within 45 miles of Khartoum. It has, however, had to return, owing to the fii-e from Erupp guns which was directed upon it by Dervishes, and also bscause chains stretched across the river blocked further progress.
