Ohau Valley Road.
Last Thursday Messrg Kebbell, McPherson and P. Stewart, on behalf of the Wirokino Road Board went to the Ohao Valley, at the back of Levin to deoide what waa beat to be done with the road-line in there. The other Wardens had other bust* neßß to attend to and therefore failed to accompany these three gentlemen. A number of the settlers interested in this line of road, and Mr Soott the engineer, however met and went with the committee. After the visit Mr Scott was instructed to make some flying surveys at certain points to see if a road could be got to run. to the plateau or to keep to the western side of the Makaki creek. If Mr Soott has any suooess the road will most likely be kept on the western aide of the Ohau all the way up the valley instead of crossing it south of the junction of the Makaretu to its east bank and then keeping that bank for some distance up. This line has however been pegged out and levels taken, but it probably will have to be abandoned as the concensus of opinion was to save crossing the stream wherever praotio* able, as although the water is not much, in floods the water rises very quickly and the big boulders make iho fords very bad. The old story of bad engineering ia again brought prominently before the ratepayers, as a big mistake has been made in not having had this visit before so much work in survey and levelling had been done on the cistern bank. The proposed line will be an expensive undertaking owing to the difficult character of the country, and the road will have to be carried through sections, thereby causing severance, as the boundary lines are not suitable. The Ohau river runs from South to North and the crossings are from west to east.
