Manawatu County Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held on Wednesday, when there were present — V. 0. Ransom (chairman), Ora W. Taylor, H. Hammond, T. Masters, A. Strang and J. B. McLennan. The correspondence was deal with as follows : — From H. Hinks, giving an undertaking that he would provide and maintain a suitable pound in the township of Sanson if appointed poundkeeper and allowed to retain the poundage. — It was decided to appoint Mr Hinks poundkeeper. From Robinson Bros., Fozton, agreeing to a proposed exchange of land for a road, providing the Council pay all expense of the transfer. — Agreed to. From William Smith, Bulls, requesting to be supplied with new wheelbarrow and crowbar in plaoe of the ones lost on the Council's work. —Referred to overseer. From George Nye, enclosing specifications for the building of a new punt for Soott's ferry at a cost of £186. From Hawkins and Hawkins, solicitors, requesting the Council to take steps to get a transfer of the land acquired for road at Foxton.— The Council's solicitor to be giveu instructions to complete the transfer. From C. H. Tarrant, on behalf of the people at Awahuri, requesting that a portion of the Awahuri-Feild-ing road near the store be fenced, the same being dangerous to traffic. —Road to be fenced. FromE. Pigott, keeper of Shannon Ferry, requesting improvements to cottage. — Agreed to. From W. B. Giesen, H. Mathews, M. Giesen, H. Bowater, J. H. J.

Bowater, J. H. Peters, G. W. Fowles and J. H. Speedy, with a request that the rates in the Mount Stewart Riding be raised to the extent of £d in the £ to cover the cost of forming and metalling the road known as Stewart's line. In reply to the Chairman, the Olerk said there were 90 ratepayers in the riding.— Consideration was deferred until next meeting. From S. J. Raine, requesting the Council to make him an entrance to his section from A'Court street, across the town belt, and for permission to make a drain.—Permission to make the drain, and the owner of the property opposite Mr Raine's section to be requested to open the road to A'Court street. From the Rev. J. Delacourt Russell, applying on behalf of the vestry of St. Thomas' Church, Sanson, for the use of the road and town belt opposite the Sunday sohool. From James Bowater, objecting to the granting of the application made by Mr Russell on the ground that he had cleared gorse from his sections, which were also abutting on the road referred to. It was resolved to give the vestry and Mr Bowater the use, (during the pleasure of the Council) of the road and town belt land near their sections. From H. Austin, Foxton, claiming £5 Is damages for cost of repairing his dray and loss of time, the dray having been broken through falling through a bridge on Hammond's line. — The road overseer Baid Mr Austin knew the .bridge was weak. — It was decided to offer him £2. Mr DanielU attended the Council's meeting and stated that there was no Bite on the Rangitikei ferry re serve suitable for a house. He was prepared to erect a new house off the reserve on the road line, from the timber of the old houses, and make improvements to tbe value of £100 in addition to the value of the timber ; also keep the building insured, provided the Coun cil would allow him the use of the reserve, rent free. — Consideration deferred. Applications were opened for the position of raDger, and Mr T. Very was appointed. It was resolved to strike a general rate of id in the £, and separate rates of £d in the £ in the San don and Awahuri ridings ; fd in the £ on the ridings of Carnarvon, Campbell, Waitohi, and Kawa Kawa, and £d in the £ on the Mt. Stewart riding. That the name of the Feilding Jockey Club be substituted in lieu of S. R. Turner on the rate book in ; respect of part section 149, Kawa Kawa, and August Gust for section 261, Sandon Carnarvon block, in place of Robert Drummond. That a contract be let to clay and fascine the sand cutting opposite Amon's property on Milner's line. That a bridge be built over the creek on Stewart's line as soon ac possible. That W. Coupe's tender of £249 for construction of bridge on the Feilding- Awahuri road, and W. H. Mather's tender of 8s 9d per chain for formation and drain on Sanson's line be accepted. Also Andrew Jonson's tender of £106 for new punt. That tenders be called for forma tion of portion ofßongotea-Longburn road. Tenders to be in by June 18th. That tenders be called for formation, acoording to specifications, of Pyke's road, from present formation to Morrison's boundary, tenders to be in by noon at next meeting. Accounts were passed for payment and the Council adjourned. — Advocate. ______________ mmm
