The Flood.
The flood now coming down the river was hardly expected, as we have had no local rain sufficient to increase the volume of the riven to the extent they are. There wag heavy rain on Thursday night, and a light rain yesterday, .ana it was surprising to learn, on the arrival of the train last night, which was an hoar late, that the Oroua river wai then up to the sleepers on the road bridge.
Yesterday the rain in Palraerston was coming down in sheets, so that more water may be expeoted than what bag arrived*
The water is over the road at Moutoa, and the milk-carts coming in to the creamery came through water up to the axles.
The road to the Wirolriao Ferry if also covered.
The Post Office last eight at 7 o'clock issued the following telegram received from op country : — Bivtrs high and still rising. Every pros* peck very heavy flood. This morning's train got as far as Oroua Bridge and reported it was unable to get further. It returned to town at 1.80 p.m.
The Bangitikei is reported to be in higher flood than any known, and the bridge between Sanson and Balls is s&id to have been destroyed.
The mail coaches from Levin and Shannon have got through. Mr Stansell had an extra coach on the farther side* The flood and the gale making it impossible for the pant to be worked.
