The Sultan has sent an autograph letter of thanks to the Czar for
defending the integrity of the Turkish Empire and inducing the Powers to adopt the principle. In this letter the Sultan states that he desires to conform to tbe wishes of the European Powers, considering that these wishes are legitimate. The Opposition Party in the Italian Parliament strougly condemn the attitude of the Government in regard to Crete. The visit of the British Channel | Squadron at the island of Minorca, off tho coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea, is causing excited comment in the French newspapers. The Burghers' Congress, held afc Heidelberg, has resolved to petition the Transvaal Government to nationalise the railways and cancel the dynamite monopoly.
