Africa.

♦ Captain White has had four engagements with an impi in Mata* beleland, and killed 150 of the enemy. By his victory he relieved the settlers in the Hartley district, who were in danger. Colonel Plumer defeated the Secombo, Umbugula and three other impis at Matoppo. After seven hoars' fighting, the rebels were completely broken. Major Kershaw and four sergeants were killed, and fifteen of the British wounded. The loss on the side of the natives was three hundred. Inspector Llewellyn was attacked in the rear, but turned the Maxim guns and swept the enemy away. A party of friendly natives deserted from the British. Further particulars are to hand of the recent fighting at Matoppo, in which Colonel Plumer defeated the Secombo, Umbugula and three other impis. Beresford's infantry, supported by Maxim guns, was advancing on a kopje held by the Matabele, when a strong force of the latter from an ambush only forty yards off charged them. A most desperate struggle took place, and the fighting was almost the hottest seen at Matoppo. Captain Beresford, finding himself hardly pressed, signalled for support, and it was in advancing to his aid that Major Kershaw was shot.
