The Populist leaders are making strenuous efforts to prevent their '
party from bolting, and have agreed to the nomination of Mr Bryan for the Presidency. For the purpose of preventing the Assembly sitting, the Turks have renewed the disorder in Canea, and the Christian population is in a state of panic. The British, Austrian and Italian warships have landed marines, and prevented bloodshed. The French warship Magenta met with a mishap off the Algerian coast. While she was riding at anchor her mooring chains parted, and she drifted ashore and struck a large rock. Her supply of coal is being taken out, and it is believed the vessel has net sustained any serious damage. The Czar has delegated to the Governor oi Warsaw the immediate control of the Vistula provinces. Mis Majesty has also appointed an assisted manager of police to enquire into political crimes.
