General Weyler, commander of the Spanish troops in Cuba, has applied for reinforcements to the extent of five thousand cavalry. Prince Hohenlohe, Chancellor of the German Empire, and his secretary, have paid a visit to Paris. It is believed to have been in connection with the Egyptian question. The Cologne Gazette states that the Emperor William and King Humbert have settled a basis of the renewal of the Triple Alliance, and it is reported that the new agreement remains in force until 1902. Natives representing a million sterling of the funds in the hands of the Caisse de la Dette justify the use of the funds for the Soudan expedition, and contend that the French opposition is ruinous. The trial has been adjourned for a fortnight. Baron Schrader has died from the effects of the wound received in his duel with Herr Katze. The German papers comment on duelling system in a hostile spirit.
