• ■ The native police at Filibuisi shot the Inspector before deserting. The rest have been disarmed. The rising is not spreading. Eight hundred volunteers are co-operating with the Chartered Company's police force. Mr Rhodes has arrived at Umtali. He said he was convinced that affairs would all come right, and he deprecated any alarm at his sudden return. He added that he fully . appreciated the settlers' troubles. The Pretoria correspondent of the Times says that the attitude of Great Britain will have a salutary effect in checking the intrigues going on. If Dr L^yds reports that Germany will not oppose the Imperial Government, the difficulty will be amicably arranged. It is believed the resignation of M. Berihelut means that the French Goverarneut will become more in* sistenb upon the question of the evacuation of Egypt. The movement southwards ha«"~^ excited the Dervishes at Docgola, and they have advanced to Suarda. Osman Digna and Aarak are at their head, and it is believed they intend to attack the communications - of the Egyptian troops.
