The English Navy.
« Lord Brassey, Governor of Victoria, speaking in Sydney, referring to the question of naval defence, say 3 the British fleet can never be too large, so vast are the interest? to be protected, but he cannot express any other feeiing than satisfaction at the present naval position. He c insiders that what the Mother Ojuutry is doing, ha 3 dona, and intends to do, is sufficient for the protection of every part of the empire, and thinks that when the time arrives for the colonies to b* further advanced, and the resources become mach greater, we shall naturally look for the creation of a powerful Australasian squadron, to be paid for by the colonies, and not by Britain. He did not, however, think the moment propitious or that it was necessary to raise the ques« tion now. The Mother Country is doing all she should do, and she would be bound to what she is doing, whether she had colonies or not, for the protection of her own trade.
