_#, We have received from the publishers the Christmas copy of the N.Z. Mail. It is a remarkably cheap sixpenny worth as besides the usual summary of the week's news there are ten special short stories. Another feature, new and commendable, is tho illustrated "note? and observations by the way " up the West Coast by " Scrutator." Some of the views have been especially taken for this issue, but some have been unearthed, or reproduced from photo's of ancient days. We refer more particularly to the view given of Foxton which plainly shows the railway running down the Main street. As the railway has been shifted out of the street some ten years or more this particular view cannot be called "up to date." " Scrutator " has however travelled his distance in such a pleasant temper that it has made us much regret to have to point out such a falling-off, for which probably he is not responsible. There can be no doubt but that the editor has taken a great deal of trouble to prepare an interesting and amusing number both for despatch to friends abroad as well as to while away a few hours under the " greenwood tree" or in the gardens where the musical mosquito singeth not. Sixty-four pages, with a handsome and unique cover, which we notice bears the brand of McKee and Gamble, is a Xmas box on the part of the proprietors of the paper to those who obtain it. We wish the Editor and his numerous assistants the usual hearty compliments of the season.
