Cinnabar.

The only large deposit of Cinnabar in situ is at Ohaewai, in the Bay of Islands. There are several places in the colony where cinnabar is found amongst the alluvial drifts, but is not in payable quantity for working. An English company has entered into arrangements with the owner of the land at Ohaewai and work has commenced. The result of analysis of specimens shows the ore in the lode 3to be of very good quality. Native Cinnabar is a compact, very heavy mineral, sometimes finely crystallized, but more generally massive, occurring in Spain, Chili, Hungary, Mexieo, California and Japan ; it is the principal and most valuable ore of the mercury of commerce, which is prepared from it by sublimation. It is a bisulphuret, and contains 86.2 parts of mercury and 13.8 parts of sulphur. Under the name of vermilion, cinnabar is is used as a pigment when refined. The most of the quicksilver deposits in the world are associated with eruptive rocks.
