Supreme Court.
The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court were opened at 10 a.m. on Monday, His Honor the Chief Justice presiding.
George Curzon admitted a charge of having on the 30th October forged a cheque for £25 in the name of Grace, Clarke and Co., Wellington, and uttered it to W. F. Shortt. The case was adjourned in order that the Probation Officer should present a report. John Idle pleaded not guilty to a charge of breaking and entering the warehouse of Benjamin and Co., Brandon street, on the 3rd October, and stealing therefrom eight boxes of tobacco, or receiving the articles knowing them to have been stolen. The jury found the prisoner guilty of receiving stolen property, and His Honor deferred sentence. On Tuesday he was sentenced to 12 months' hard labour. A Native named Otene Karaitiana was charged with having, on the 30th October, at Palmerston North, obtained £1 3s 6d and £1 17s 6d from W. E. Andrews, hotelkeeper, and on the same day £5 15s 6d from J. L. Limbell, another hotelkeeper of Paltnerston North, by means of valueless cheques. He was further charged with having, on the 2nd November, attempted to cash a valueless cheque for £5 15s 6d with Mr Kimbeil. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, and His Honor deferred sentence for the report of the Probation Officer. The Grand Jury returned true bills in the following cases : — M. Bigg, grevious bodily harm ; A. L. Webster, larceny (three charges) ; Chu Queen, breach of the Bankruptcy Act ; Alfred Yates, grievous bodily harm ; Henry Coombe, theft ; Wm. Doyle and Edward Byan, assault and robbery ; Thomas Nordisch, alats Briggs, horse stealing ; Carrie Hope, theft ; Edward McCaghey, indecent assault ; Bernard Watts and Alexander Fabian, larceny ; F. Arnold and G. Bauser,
assault and robbery ; Thos. Williams, stabbing ; and J. H. and A. Brown, procuring abortion. The indictment against Thos. Ncior, for perjury, was thrown out, and His Honor said the jury were perfectly right in taking that course. The Grand Jury returned no bills in the following cases : —James Reid, breaking and entering ; William Simmonds and H. Woodward, assault and robbery ; William Keisenberg, assault with intent; Wm. McDermott, sheep stealing; Wm. Delahunty, attempted suicide ; Albert Jeffery, causing actual bodily harm. Tuesday, December 8. Thomas Nordisch, alia* Briggs, was charged with the theft of a horse, saddle and bridle, the properly of Alexander Burnett, at Master ton, on October 2. The jury returned a verdict of guilty. His Honor said prisoner had had many warnings, and he could not pass a less sentence than 18 months' hard labour in the Terrace Gaol, Wellington. Thos. Williams, seaman, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having stabbed Thomas David Hughes at an early hour on Sunday morning last. The jury returned a verdict of having caused actual bodily harm. Prisoner was sentenced to four months' hard labour in the Terraoe Gaol, Wellington.
