.» Mr Hulke, at one time head master of the Foxton School, and until the other day head master of the Newtbwn School, has been having a Blight (?) difference of opinion with his committee. Poor committee. The dispute does not seem, by the reports to have been one of very much consequence, and has probably beeil exaggerated owing to the fact, as JMr Hulke explained to a householder's meeting that " he was getting an old man, and was tired of the annoyance that had been thrust upon him." He therefore, rather hastily led the committee, and even the meeting to believe he had resigned, though in speaking at the meeting he declared " be had nob yet resigned — he had only left for the present." No one seemed to understand what he meant by his peculiar statement, but they paid him the compliment (?) by asking him to reconsider his decision " in which way ? School Committees meet with no favour from Mr Charles Hulke. " The time would come when School Committees would bo done away with altogether, and the wholo matter be left to the Education Board,'' said Mr Hulke, When it does come, if it does, it will be a bad day fur the schools. Masters always pine for an Education Board control whenever a School Committee carries out the instructions of the Education Act, and inquires into any alleged grievances. We -find, that the public, though wonderfully ready to condemn the action of^the committee were wonderfully ignorant of the duties it has to carry out, and also of the provi* sions of the Act they were discus* sing. Someone of the audience moved a resolution to the effect that the oommittee be requested to resign "so that the opinion of the district may be taken in the re-election of a oommittee." This resolution was seconded and carried, though, even it the committee aoted upon the request, there would be no re-election.
